China's Ministry of Industry and Information Technology is implementing a national identification system to assign a unique 29-digit code to every humanoid robot operating in the country. According to BGR, the Chinese humanoid market has grown to include over 100 manufacturers and roughly 28,000 active units.
The Humanoid Robotics and Embodied Intelligence Standardization (HEIS) committee is managing the initiative, officially named the "Humanoid Full Lifecycle Management Service Platform." The system tracks each machine from the assembly line until it is recycled for parts.
The 29-digit ID breaks down into four specific sections:
- Two digits for a country code, used for cross-border shipments and sales.
- Four digits to identify the original manufacturing company.
- Six digits to specify the precise make and model.
- Seventeen digits serving as the unit's unique serial number.
The tracking requirements apply to all stages of the sector, spanning manufacturers, sellers, service providers, recycling plants, and end users. The sheer volume of robots in circulation prompted the tracking effort, following recent hardware demonstrations like a bipedal robot completing a half-marathon and new physical AI partnerships with companies like Nvidia.
Why it matters: The ID system establishes a baseline of state oversight before the humanoid hardware sector scales further. By tracking a robot's usage and movements throughout its lifecycle, authorities can monitor risks and immediately identify responsible parties if a specific unit malfunctions or causes an incident.
